M&S Lingerie Department

Marks & Spencer were looking for a lingerie department redesign with a brief to create a more premium and luxurious space.  The scope included highlighting the M&S brands on offer within lingerie, sleepwear and hosiery, whilst also providing a spacious design for customers to browse at a gentler pace to the rest of the store.

Kiwi & Pom created an environment that was warm and feminine, with a premium, intimate feel.  A tonal colour palette unified the department and created a subtle backdrop against the variety of fabrics that needed to be displayed.  An oak floor with a white-washed, blush tone was introduced to differentiate the department and create a ‘shop within a shop’.  Screens were designed to create a threshold at the department entrance, while also displaying product and large format graphics.

Part of the design solution included custom-made furniture and larger cabinetry, designed to display and highlight product.  Curved rails were anchored by circular rugs, enhancing the luxurious feel.  Kiwi & Pom also improved the overall layout to create more space in the floor and improved flow.  This allowed for seasonal flexibility within displays and introduced a calmer browsing environment.

Elevated displays were created for individual M&S brands, framed along the wall against a polished plaster backdrop and illuminated using soft backlighting.  Large format graphics were positioned and lit alongside to help set the brands apart and give the perimeter focus.

Kiwi & Pom proposed that they incorporate the fitting room within the scope, allowing for a holistic design solution and cohesion between the areas.  As a result M&S set a brief to promote their lingerie fitting service within the design.  In response, Kiwi & Pom designed a console table, drawer set and wardrobe for the area – situated within a secondary lobby to provide a concierge-style point to greet customers, and a top-ten product edit offered from the wardrobe.  An initial threshold provides a waiting area for accompanying shoppers.
