Kiwi and Pom’s concept was to combine wood and metal to create seamless forms which would be both highly functional, but beautiful to look at and touch.

The final kit consists of pastry knife, pastry cutter, pastry brush and roller. The design also includes a twist on the traditional pie-making marking which stamps a shape into the top of the pastry crust to indicate its contents

The project was a chance to work with classic materials – wood, steel, marble, enamel – to create forms that are functional but enjoyable to use.

Pie Set, Wallpaper* Handmade

This one-off design project was commissioned by Wallpaper* for its annual ‘Handmade’ issue.  Alongside a traditional enamelled dish sits a cutlery set for pastry prep, rolling pin, chopping board, pie stamp and trio of pie dishes.  The project was a chance to work with classic materials – wood, steel, marble, enamel – to create forms that are functional but enjoyable to use.

Each year, Wallpaper* magazine runs a special concept issue called ‘Handmade’ in which high-profile designers, architects and artists are invited to collaborate with manufacturers to create a bespoke product.

Inspired by seeing its work on Falcon enamelware, Wallpaper* approached Kiwi & Pom to design a Pie Making Set that could be exhibited at the Milan Furniture Fair and published in Wallpaper*.

Kiwi and Pom’s concept was to combine wood and metal to create seamless forms which would be both highly functional, but beautiful to look at and touch.

The final kit consists of pastry knife, pastry cutter, pastry brush and roller. The design also includes a twist on the traditional pie-making marking which stamps a shape into the top of the pastry crust to indicate its contents. This seemed like a very subtle way of telling people what was inside the pie.  Instead, we liked the idea of different types of pie being shaped in a different way. So alongside a more traditional pie ‘stamp’, Kiwi & Pom designed a trio of shaped pie dishes.

The kit also includes an enamel pie dish and chopping board which acts as a lid for the dish.

The pie kit was flown to New York where Pie-making institution ‘Four & Twenty Blackbirds’ used its contents to create a special Wallpaper pie which was published in the ‘Handmade’ issue of the magazine.
