    Kiwi & Pom were appointed by Wyevale Garden Centres to create a strong café brand identity and an aspirational, yet accessible environment; whilst also focusing on ‘micro-roasting’. Kiwi & Pom handled all aspects of the café interior, branding and art direction. 

    Kiwi & Pom were awarded a Gold Design Effectiveness Award by the DBA in February 2016, for the success of Coffee Ground and their further portfolio of work for Wyevale.

    Centrepiece to the design is a galvanised steel free-standing ‘shed’ clad with timber lapped boards. The servery was designed with both perimeter and mid-floor locations in mind, enabling the café to drop into a variety of locations. The mid-floor configuration uses the rear of the shed to create a pleasant environment to sit – with a backdrop of weatherboard, plants, books and coffee.

    Brand identity design was part of the project from the outset. Kiwi & Pom handled art direction for all graphical elements, including photography, artwork and web design. The distinctive shape of the ‘shed’ was incorporated into branding and graphics, and Kiwi & Pom proposed that a hand-drawn illustration be used to explore the coffee process.

    As well as a functional space, the oversized ‘shed’ serves as landmark for the café, allowing it to be seen from a distance within the larger garden centres. The shed is also a self-contained unit with a modular structure, allowing for the length to be modified depending on the demands of each site. Illustrative artwork depicts the key stages of the coffee process, while wall graphics tie outdoor themes into the café space.

    The design is characterised by a ‘refined rustic’ palette of galvanized steel, weathered zinc, terracotta pots, rattan furniture and gabion planters – all relating to the outdoors and selected as ‘living materials’ that would patina with age. Wherever possible the flooring was not changed to help save cost, and ground the design in context.

    The physical design of the Café took direct inspiration from the garden – with four key components comprising; a serving counter ‘shed’, kitchen ‘green house’, mobile ‘plant screens’ and ‘garden bench’ seating.  Each core component is free standing so that it can drop into an existing environment with minimal disruption.

    The shed works as a preparation area, servery and display for products. This provided an opportunity to showcase preparation in front of the customer, as opposed to back of house, whilst also highlighting the fresh food offer.

    The self-supporting roof provides a structure from which to suspend pendant lights above the food display, as well as consistently locating the lit Coffee Ground sign height.

    Hand-painted direct to the wall, a ‘7-step coffee story’ illustration explains the coffee process in a simple but engaging way.  This includes an explanation of ‘micro-roasting’ and Coffee Ground’s strong environmental credentials – as purveyors of triple certified coffee and of upcycled spent coffee ground soil nourisher.

    Coffee Ground uses ‘micro-roasting’, which enables the ‘slow-roast’ of one kilo batches of coffee with quality and consistency. The roaster is positioned to make it highly visible to the customer, placing coffee centre stage for Coffee Ground.

Coffee Ground

In 2014, Kiwi & Pom were invited by the UK’s largest garden centre chain to develop a new artisan café concept that would focus on ‘micro-roasting’. Kiwi & Pom handled all aspects of the branding, café interior and art direction. 

Kiwi & Pom were proud to be awarded a Gold Design Effectiveness Award in 2016 by the Design Business Association for the success of Coffee Ground, within a further portfolio of work for Wyevale Garden Centres that also includes the Botanic Kitchen restaurants.  Gold is awarded to projects that have demonstrated ‘an outstanding example of design effectiveness’.

Coffee Ground won the Restaurant & Bar Design Award 2015 for ‘Restaurant or Bar in another space’. Judges described Coffee Ground as “an optimistic environment”.

Coffee Ground is characterised by a ‘refined rustic’ palette of galvanized steel, weathered zinc, terracotta pots, rattan furniture and gabion planters – all relating to the outdoors and selected as ‘living materials’ that will patina with age. The shed works as a preparation area, servery and display for products, providing an opportunity to showcase preparation in front of the customer, as opposed to back of house.

As well as a functional space, the oversized ‘shed’ serves as a landmark for the café, allowing it to be seen from a distance within larger sites.  Its distinctive shape is also incorporated into branding and graphics. The structure is modular, allowing for the length of the shed to be modified depending on the demands of each site.

The remaining space is designed to be as flexible as possible. Kiwi & Pom designed bespoke mobile ‘plant screens’, providing green space dividers to enclose the café space whilst also referencing the outdoors. As part of the complete design concept, Kiwi & Pom also specified items including picnic inspired enamel tableware and plant marker table numbers.  The hand-made feel is reinforced by the hand-painted wall illustration explaining the coffee growing, harvesting and batch roasting process. Lloyd Loom and rattan chairs were sourced to reinforce the connection with the garden.

The first Coffee Ground café opened at Endsleigh in Devon, followed by sites in Hemel Hempstead and Beaconsfield. At Hemel Hempstead, the rear of the free-standing shed is complete with shelving and serves as a bookshop, with plants replacing bookends. Coffee Ground now operates within ten garden centre sites.
